DESCRIPTION
The last Classic Mini's:
In late 1996, the last comprehensive technical change for the Classic Mini was implemented with the introduction of the multipoint injection system (in-short MPI). This was the last hurrah in order to bring the little icon up to date with stringent EC emissions regulations, improve driveability and raise power by about 10 hp bringing the total to 63hp. Other notable technical changes include the relocation of the radiator to the front of the engine and the installation of a higher final drive gear ratio amongst others.
Over the years many special editions of the Classic Mini were introduced in a variety of markets, with one being the "British Open". The Mini British Open Classic was a limited run of 1000 cars for the UK market in 1992. However, there were two limited runs for the German market, the 1st in 1992 and the 2nd in 1998, the last run was based on the much more sought-after Cooper MPI Sportspack and less than 200 cars are believed to have been constructed in either Black or BRG.
Original Sportspacks are widely regarded as the most collectable of the last Mini’s built, rust-free examples with warranted low mileages are increasingly rare. The great spec, limited-run examples are even rarer!
This Sportspack British Open:
We are always looking for collectible Classic Mini's and we're very pleased to have found another great example! This Mini 1.3 MPI Sportspack is an original British Open of the second series, originally registered on the 30th of October 1998 to Landau in the South West of Germany. Finished in the striking colour combo of BRG over a full leather Beige interior, sporting 13" wheels with wheel arches, 4 additional lights (2 driving and 2 fog) and the Webasto electronically operated panoramic roof - exactly how it left the factory.
Chassis no 4469 is a near mint example throughout. Having covered a mere 54.950 substantiated km's with just 3 private owners in its entire life. The body is, as far as we're aware, totally unwelded and completely rust free throughout. All spotwelds, water apertures and shutlines depict a very original body. The paint finish is very consistent throughout, showing no excessive signs of wear and tear and is correct in all apertures. Technically she is equally sorted, fully functioning and driving as per a Classic Mini should. She fires up at the flick of the key, runs dead-smooth and pulls very nicely - and absolutely no crunchy synchros in the gearbox whatsoever. All electrics work as per they should and the Webasto roof (still the original one!) opens and closes very smoothly and seals nicely all round.
The interior is near brand new, festooned in Beige full leather upholstery, Burr Walnut veneer dash, door- and (quite rare) steering wheel inserts to top it all off. Especially with the roof opened the Beige contrast with the Dark BRG just oozes British style and sophistication. The underside and apertures of the car boast residues of Dinitrol rust-proofing - probably one of the reasons it presents in such great shape today.
Today this stunning Mini is accompanied by the original booklet pouch with all original manuals, TÜV documentation and two original sets of keys. The last service was carried out by the previous owner (a noted Mini collector) at 53.150 km's and four near new Yokohama tires are fitted - she's completely ready to go and needs for nothing.

Sportspack Mini's with low, substantiated mileage are becoming increasingly rare. This limited-run edition, finished in the defacto spec for a Classic Mini is as fine as they come.
