DESCRIPTION

An incredibly rare and truly special Mini—one of only around 200 ever built to this exact specification. Unlike earlier factory-built Cooper S models, these later versions started as standard Mini Coopers and were upgraded to Cooper S specification by official Cooper dealers. This was the only way to get a true Cooper S at the time, making these models unique in Mini history.

This particular car is Chassis No. 156 of the 200 conversions, making it an important piece of Mini heritage.

This Mini was upgraded with the John Cooper ‘S’ Pack, an official tuning kit developed by John Cooper Garages in collaboration with Janspeed. Sold for £1,470.01 including installation, this upgrade transformed the standard Cooper into something far more exciting. The kit included a specially developed COOPER-stamped cylinder head, twin SU carburetors, a high-flow exhaust system, and a factory-fitted oil cooler to keep temperatures in check. A reworked head and air intake fine-tuned performance, bringing power up to 78 horsepower—a significant improvement over the standard Cooper.

Today, an original John Cooper ‘S’ Pack is incredibly rare. Our friends at Ben van Leeuwen were lucky to find such a pack and have it on display in their showroom, complete with stickers, head, etc.

This Mini has had just one careful owner from new, who kept detailed records of every service and even saved its second lubrication service card. The original purchase documents, service history, and mileage records are all present. It has recently undergone a full service, including an oil change, new tires, and a safety inspection to ensure it is road-ready.

With its lightweight body, quick-revving engine, and legendary Mini handling, this Cooper S conversion delivers a genuine old-school driving experience—one that feels just as engaging today as it did in 1991.

Stepping inside, everything feels fresh, just like when it left the dealer. The original owner even opted for a premium audio system, professionally installed by the dealer at the time. It features speakers under the seats and on the dashboard, a built-in CD player with multi-disc storage under the rear seat, and a working cassette deck for an authentic period-correct experience.

In the early 1990s, the Mini Cooper S was reborn through a dealer conversion program by John Cooper Garages. These cars retained the charm of the original 1960s Cooper S models but were built on the later, more refined Mini platform. They received upgraded engines, brakes, and performance tuning, making them some of the most desirable Minis of their era.

A car like this doesn’t come around often. With its ultra-low mileage, first-owner history, and original documentation, it stands as one of the best-preserved examples of its kind. A piece of Mini history, exactly as it should be.
