The Appeal

In 1961, John Cooper - after much debate with Alec Issigonis - managed to realise his dream of producing a 'Performance Mini' - the Mini Cooper. To say it was a smash hit is an understatement - the car was built in only 1,000 units, intended for Group 2 Rally Racing, and quickly gained an impressive record as a rally racer. It's little wonder, then, that more were quick to follow - the more powerful 'Mini Cooper S' was born.

The Morris Mini Cooper S first hit the market in March 1963, with a still relatively modest 1071cc A-Series engine - but by now, the Cooper S's success was already assured, and had soon set up a new way of life for Issigonis's masterpiece. By 1965, two more sports models had joined the fray - the smaller 970cc Mini Cooper S, and this beauty - the 1275cc Mini Cooper S. Naturally, the 1275cc was the biggest success of the Coopers, and quickly dominated the scene.

With its 1,275 cc engine, twin HS2 SU carburettors, and 7-inch disc brakes, the Cooper S was a formidable competitor in its day, achieving notable success in events like the Monte Carlo Rally. Beyond all else, though, it was fun - the car's agile handling and charming character soon led to drivers becoming fiercely dedicated to their little cars. The Mini earned more applause and affection from driver and audience alike than any of its competitors. It was an icon!

This particular Cooper S stands out due to its meticulous restoration, which we're informed has led to it driving just as well - if not better - than it would have leaving the factory. The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate confirms its matching numbers, build and delivery dates, and original colours and equipment, and following a full inspection and service, we're convinced this remarkable car is in fine fettle for the lucky new owner.
